Howdy Folks!

We have a new Firmware/Software Beta bundle for the Guitar Wing, and we think you'll love this one!

Last October, Apple announced that they had been working with the folks at the Midi Manufacturers Association (MMA) to develop a standard for sending MIDI over Bluetooth.
Since then, we have been working with the help of Apple's Engineers to get the Guitar Wing up to spec.

Now that the Guitar Wing is ready; we offer the firmware for anyone to try.
We've put this new system through some rigorous testing, and it's done great!
Still, this update will be in Beta for a little while, while we look for kinks.
Please let us know if you find any!

Devices that Support Direct Connection
You can connect to any device that supports Bluetooth LE and runs either IOS 8 or OS X Yosemite.
iPhone 4s and newer phones support Bluetooth LE.
iPads 3 and newer (as well as iPad Mini) support Bluetooth LE.
As for Apple Laptops and Desktops, it varies by device, but support for Bluetooth LE first appeared in Apple's 2012 releases of the MacBook Air and MacBook Mini.

- 'connect' can now detect when multiple guitar wings (USB Receivers and/or Direct Connections)  are connected to the computer.
A pop-up is displayed, and the user can select between them.

Known Issues
- An app is required on IOS8 to connect the Guitar Wing. In the example, we suggested 'MIDI LE' for managing the connection.  There is no 'IOS 8' Setting that can manage this feature, currently.
- Editor: Disabling the Motion Control Enabling Button is currently not working properly.
A fix for this will be released on 3/24/15.
- Editor: MIDI Device Select Window is  not labeled properly.
- Motion Control Enabling Button does not display LED Feedback when it does not output a message.
- WingFx: The 'connect' button on the main-screen is currently not working for direct Bluetooth Connections.
You must follow steps 9 and 10 of the 'IOS 8' instructions above to connect WingFx to the Guitar Wing.

Resolved Issues
- Firmware Update Software: Bluetooth Selection Dialog (to select between multiple devices), was not responding to selections.  Guitar Wing Firmware Update v105 Resolves the issue. Released - 3/11/15.

Changing the speed of knobs with the Brain V2

Hi could someone help me change the speed of knobs with the brain V2 please?

The rotary encoders and rotary potentiometers need to be a little slower to enable a more precise control.

This is needed for changing the pitch in increments of 1 instead of increments of 2 etc.

Thanks.

Stepsequencing like CNTRL:R

hey guys,

i´m building a quiet fantastic custom controller at the moment, based on 2x brainv2, containing 50-60 pushbuttons and around 20 encoders.
2 blocks of the pushbuttons should work as stepsequenced drum-grids. actually i´ll have a 4x4 and a 16x2 grid for that.

questions (and sorry, i´m a bloody beginner):
- where can i find general info for programming that?
- which max4live stepsequencer might be best for that?

i´ll have millions more questions as soon as i have the controller in my hands, these 2 are just to learn and understand it, to get it done quickly when the controller is finally built in about 3 weeks from now.

i´m attaching a screenshoot of the frontpanel to give you an idea what this thing will be like.

thanks a lot

CNTRLR State Follow

I have a set of buttons assigned as toggles.  If I toggle them with the control surface, all is well.  If I toggle them from the software, all is well.  If I toggle the button from software, then hit the hardware button, nothing happens on the first hit, only the second.  I have confirmed the proper MIDI codes are being transferred. It is as if the CNTRLR does not recognize "state".  Even though the hardware LED responds to the software button, it is as if the CNTRLR didn't really recognize that I changed the state of the button,  So then I need to hit it twice in hardware to make the software change.  This is not acting truly bidirectional (IMO) and is throwing me off.

Brain v2 with Interlink Electronics FSR 408

Hello,

I'm new to the Livid Instrument Builder, just received the kit yesterday.

The plan is to build an instrument using Interlink Electronics FSR 408 sensors

http://www.interlinkelectronics.com/FSR408.php

I quickly tried one last night (I"ll use 61 of those in total)
wired 1 FSR 408
one tab to the +Voltage
the other tab to ID 01
With Brain Configure I only enabled Analaog ID 01,
sent configuration to the brain

but I couldn't get a decent response out of it,
I tested with all 6 fsr modes.
I couldn't get fast rolls to register, I had to wait a second between strokes.

Anything special I should do ?

Reading through the wiki I just found :
Unused analog pin headers need to be physically grounded using our header ground boards supplied with each Bus Board. If unused analog connections are left open you will have a noisy stream of MIDI data from the open pins! Grounding unused headers are easy by just plugging in the female socket of the ground board making sure to line up the arrow designating pin 1 marked on the BusBoard header to the white square marked on pin 1 of the grounding board.

Is that still the case? Could this be the issue?

Datasheet for the FSR sensor is available here :

Using encoder with push button shaft with Brain jr.

I have a bunch of encoders that I got off ebay for various projects.  They all have a push button shaft and 5 pins.  I can get the encoder portion to work using the L, R and C pins, but I cannot get the push button to work right. I tried to plug the remaining 2 pins into an open button pair on the header but that didn't seem to work either. So can both elements of these encoders work with the Brain Jr?

Editor Wiki, special buttons confussion

Hi all again....learning about the online editor, at the Livid's Wiki, i  found a little confusing thing or error  ( i think)

Referenced to  the special function buttons: ( enc. speed )

""" If a button is configured as enc speed, it will send no MIDI messages. (CC 126)  """

But i see  in the online editor,  in my Ds1,  the  encoder button assigned for that function is Cc 127.  And if i reassign it to another button ,  it has the same  Cc, 127,  it's a Wiki's error ¿?

Base Ableton Live remote script - strange scale behavior

$

Hi - I see that the creator of the Live remote script for Base takes part on this board, figured I'd post this as a discussion in case anyone else has this issue...

In Shifted Device Mode, when I use the Scale Mode up and down buttons to scroll through the scales, I get some odd results:

1) The scales are ordered alphabetically by scale name rather than the order given in map.py (and in the wiki). Not a big deal.

2) The 2-character scale names shown on the LED are sometimes using the 1st 2 characters of their full scale name instead of the corresponding SCALEABBREVS abbreviations.

So for example the 3 Bebop scales all have the same name in the LED: "Be".

For my own use I wrote out how scale mode is working for me, it's a mix of SCALEABBREVS and SCALES names, all rearranged into scale name alphabetical order:

-A    Auto
bE   Bebop Dom
bE   Bebop Loc
bE   Bebop Maj
bU   Bhairav
12   Chromatic
CP    Composite
d-    Dim
do    Dominant Sus
II    Dorian
-d    DrumPad
NE    Enigmatic
En    Enigmatic Min
hA    Harmonic Min
hr    Hirojoshi
hu    Hungarian Min
IS    In-Sen
Iw    Iwato
hN    Kumoi
Uh    Locrian
IU    Lydian
N-    Maj
NA    Maj Pent
NE    Melodic Min
N-    Min
NI    Min Blues
NI    Min Gypsy
NI    Min Pent
NI    Mixolydian
E3    Mod
nE    Neopolitan Maj
nE    Neopolitan Min
P9    Pelog
Pr    Persian
Ih    Phrygian
-S    Session
SP    Spanish
Su    Super Loc
wh    Whole-half
wh    Whole Tone

I tried my novice scripting hand at editing map.py to fix the problem, and only seemed to mix things up more, so I went back to the original file.

I am finding that scale mode is my favorite use for the Base in Live, really hope there is a fix to make it easier to navigate. Thanks so much for any help!

Selectrix beta: MIDI to keystroke application

Here's a nice utility to turn MIDI from a controller into keystrokes. Includes modifiers for command, option, alt, shift, and ctrl. A simple MIDI learn process makes it easy to latch MIDI notes and ccs to letters, numbers, and other keystrokes.

DOWNLOAD:
http://lividinstruments.com/dl/Selectrix_1.0_Installer_WIN.exe
http://lividinstruments.com/dl/Selectrix_100_OSX.zip

This will work with any controller, but will automatically search for a Livid controller on startup.
Settings are automatically saved on each assignment.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you!

Brain V2 and soft takeover

$

Hi there everyone I'm in need of some help if possible please.

I was just about to order 64 rotary potentiometers and 64 rotary encoders to use with the brain V2 until I noticed a problem with the controls abruptly jumping when switching through soft synths within ableton live. I'm aware of the soft takeover modes within ableton live however I can only get this to work if map my controls to a VSTi within the rack using the configure button. If I do this I cannot switch to a different synth as the controls will only then control the one synth I configured in the rack even if I press record enable on another track.

Is there a way I can have multiple softsynths with soft takeover enabling me to use anaolg controls as well as digital?

I would appreciate some help with this if possible, thanks.

Tony.

New Guitar Wing user - comments and questions

Hi guys,

Earlier today I bought the Guitar Wing. Let me say thank you first. I've been waiting for something like this for at least five years. Finally, someone has built it and my first hour or so playing with it was rather pleasant. The first thing I did was update the firmware which worked flawlessly and now I can connect to my iPad and Mac Mini without the dongle. Now I can finally get rid of that ugly annoying usb hub! The editor seems to be really well made too. Well done!

Now, I do have a few questions and an urgent feature request:

1. My main electric guitar is a Fender Jeff Beck custom from the early nineties. This is a guitar with a thick body. It's about 47mm deep. The wiki states the GW can accommodate guitars up to 45mm and seeing the GW arm bend on my guitar worries me a bit. How stable is this thing? Am I risking permanent damage?

2. What I'd really like to do is fit the GW on an acoustic guitar so I'm thinking about modding the clamp. How difficult would that be? Do you have suggestions as to how to go about this? Does the bulky end of the clamp contain the battery? What about the cable? If this doesn't work I'd even consider buying another guitar. I so want to love the GW ;-)

3. Is there a way to check on the battery charge? If not, what's the best way to deal with the battery (when to charge, for how long)?

4. Here's my urgent feature request: could you please add a way to use the big pads as standard momentary cc buttons (on = 127, off = 0). I want to use the pads as function triggers with a software that doesn't let me assign midi noteon messages to those functions. I think I'm not the only one who would find this useful and it would be easy to implement.

That's all, thanks again for building this thing and I'm looking forward to some suggestions.

Cheers,
Lutz

DS1: User mode or equivalent?

$

Very happy with my new DS1 so far, but there are two things I must have if I'm going to be able to retire my Launch Control from the rig.

I need a crossfader and tempo knob, and I need to be able to page through FX racks within the same channel. I love the Max patch that lets you map sends to an fx rack, but right now that's prohibitive when those sends are on a track that has at least one full fx rack already, as I can't get to the actual instrument, only the sends in such case.

Previously I used the Launch Control's Factory 3 mode to page between multiple fx racks within the same track, but I don't see how I can do this with DS1. As for the crossfader and tempo knobs, I really only need to map those two things, so even one page of user mapping would be perfect, otherwise could I override two of the right side knobs with the online editor at all?

Thanks for helping a Livid newbie.

Possible to use 64 Potentiometers and 63 rotary encoders with brain V2?

Hi, is it possible to use 64 Potentiometers and 63 rotary encoders with brain V2 without experiencing problems?

I read on the  Ableton forum that some CCs are in standard use & should not be used, i.e. modulation, volume...

I want all 127 controls for controlling soft synths and are trying to find out if this is possible please?

Thanks

Hello friends,

Newb question.  I've had my Livid Cntrl:R for about a year and it has seen a lot of work.  One of my faders is giving shitty midi data and I need to replace it.  I took a quick look at the builder parts available and didn't see any faders.

Am I missing somethin' silly obvious or nah?  Can I buy a replacement fader from Livid?

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Is this OHM64 or OHM RGB?

Hi

Can you tell from the photos? It's been listed as OHM64 but I messaged seller and they don't know for certain. Unfortunately they don't know much about it. It was sent to them for a review but reviewer has left. Seller isn't technical so doesn't seem up for installing software or jazz pluging etc..

I thought it could be the rgb because the wood side panels look thicker than the red or the blue light OHM64s and seems that the lights he was able to show in the last photo are white.

Anyway any help much appreciated!

OhmModes Scrolling Issue in Live 9

$

I work with sets that have many tracks, and I have been experiencing an issue with OhmModes and Live Session View where after about Track 20 or so, when I scroll more to the right, Live automatically takes the view back to track 1. I'll realign the view to the location of the OhmModes box only to have Live take the view back to track 1 when I scroll again with the OhmRGB. It's maddening!

I've tried closing and restarting the software several times with no luck. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't tell if it's an issue with OhmModes or a bug in Ableton Live 9. Would appreciate any input.

I'm running the newest versions of Mac OSX and Live 9 + OhmModes.

Thanks!

Foot stomping trip wire with velocity?

$

Hi everyone,

My Brain (2) is on order!

But my other brain had some thoughts.
I wouldn't mind doing something like the:

Finhol Laser Kick

It basically a short range laser trip wire.

I figure this would be super simple with a brain.  Add a laser or ir led and an a opto receiver.  Generate some midi when the laser is tripped and let software in the PC handle the sync.

So that would be easy with a Brain 2

But then I thought it'd be nice to have some velocity.  I could use a FSR to step on but it might were out from stomping on it.
I was think of doing the trick where you trip one input, then another, and measure the time between them to determine velocity.
Maybe a laser line generator (modulated) with a couple of receivers on the other side.  A pivoting foot would trip sensors closer to the heel as I pivot down, then again near the toe.  Time between the two calculated for velocity.

Is there anything on a Brain that can measure time between two or more button pushes to derive velocity?

I can think of a few ways to do this externally, but if the Brain can do it already then all the better.

Thanks in advance!

FSR + rubber pads

Anyone a good hint where to get rubber pads (perhaps a bit larger than the ones used with the omni boards)that fit on these force sensing resistor pads. I like to have a row of velocity sensitive buttons on my controller and am currently not sure which 'hardware on top' to pick.

Thanks! Moritz

(Like the pads on e.g. the LPD8 controller http://6be54c364949b623a3c0-4409a68c214f3a9eeca8d0265e9266c0.r0.cf2.rackcdn.com/452/images/sized/lpd8_web_large_700x438.png or the round ones on the GuitarWing http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server2600/pzq6b4j/products/222/images/569/Guitar_Wing_attached_web__57110.1410560863.1280.1280.jpg?c=2)
